Instagram plans ‘Meta AI generated’ post labels

Meta’s forthcoming generative AI tools, based on the new Llama 2 model, appear to be in the pipeline. The tech giant is reportedly developing several new generative AI features for Instagram, including labels enabling creators to tag images as “generated by Meta AI.”

  • Who revealed this information? This news comes from screenshots shared by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who is known for unveiling unreleased features from Meta’s applications. Paluzzi recently posted a screenshot that shows an in-app message explaining how posts created with generative AI tools could soon be labeled within Instagram. The message reads, “The creator or Meta said that this content was created or edited with AI,” with additional labels indicating that it was “generated by Meta AI” and that “content created with AI is typically labeled so that it can be easily detected.”

Has Meta commented on these developments? A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment. However, the screenshot suggests that the company, like Google and others in the AI space, is keen on helping users recognize when AI has been used in content creation. As generative AI tools become more prevalent, researchers and policymakers have expressed concerns about potential misuse of the technology, such as spreading misinformation or misleading individuals.

What safety measures are being considered? Earlier this month, seven AI companies – including Meta – committed to adopting a series of AI safety measures like watermarks for AI-generated content.

What does the future hold for Meta’s consumer-facing generative AI plans? While Meta has not disclosed many details about its consumer-facing generative AI plans, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has dropped several hints. He stated in a recent quarterly earnings call, “We’re also building a number of new products ourselves using Llama that will work across our services.” He went on to envision a multitude of ways AI could assist people in connecting and expressing themselves on their apps.

Are there other AI-powered features in the works for Instagram? Yes, Paluzzi has found evidence of other generative AI-powered features for Instagram, including a “message summary” feature for condensing lengthy DMs and new artistic tools for editing Stories.
